The resurgence of the Type S insignia, which debuted on the 2021 TLX, is here to stay. In a recent interview with MotorTrend, Acura Brand Officer Jon Ikeda confirmed rumors about the upcoming MDX Type S performance crossover and an additional smaller sedan, affirming that every future Acura model will include a high-performance variant wearing the Type S badge.
“Our goal is to apply the Type S label across the lineup, starting with the TLX,” Ikeda stated. “We have already mentioned it for the MDX.”
Accidentally, Acura confirmed the MDX Type S back in June when a dealer-focused presentation was inadvertently released to the public. This same presentation also alluded to an unnamed sedan smaller than the TLX, which will naturally feature its own Type S variant.
Ikeda elaborated on the forthcoming compact model saying, “We aim to introduce an entry-level sedan to fill that gap and are exploring the best options. We still have the ILX and other potentials that will help us transition into this market.”
However, Ikeda mentioned that it’s unlikely that the TLX’s specially designed sports sedan architecture will be utilized for other models at this time.
“At present, that’s not under consideration,” Ikeda stated. “As we explore future products, anything is possible. But currently, this chassis is specifically engineered for the TLX. If we were to expand and create derivatives, that could be an option.”
In more promising news, Ikeda did not dismiss the possibility of technology advancement being shared between Acura and Honda. While this doesn’t necessarily mean a major shift—such as the Accord potentially transitioning to rear-wheel drive like the new Mazda6 rumored to—the automaker hinted that upcoming sporty Hondas might incorporate some elements from Acura.
“I’m not interested in the notion that ‘Honda can’t have what Acura has,’” Ikeda went on. “That’s not how this brand was established. Our focus has always been on creating exceptional, high-performance products, which can become costly. We are a family. The idea that ‘they can’t have this,’ or ‘we can’t obtain that’ is not something I believe in.”
Ikeda opted not to discuss the potential of a third-generation NSX, a nameplate Acura may be justified in letting go due to disappointing sales. When approached by The Drive for additional insights regarding plans for the Type S label expansion, Acura refrained from providing further information.
“We are witnessing significant excitement in the market following the return of the Acura Type S performance variants, beginning with the TLX Type S this Spring,” said spokesperson Andrew Quillin. “We don’t have more details to share at this moment, but we eagerly anticipate revealing more soon.”
