Tesla has announced its Q3 2024 vehicle safety report. According to the company’s data, vehicles equipped with Autopilot technology experience significantly fewer crashes compared to the national average.
In the third quarter of 2024, Tesla noted one crash for every 7.08 million miles driven with Autopilot engaged. In contrast, vehicles driven without Autopilot recorded one crash for every 1.29 million miles.

To provide further context, Tesla referenced data from the NHTSA and FHWA, indicating that an automobile crash occurs approximately every 670,000 miles in the United States. This data underscores the effectiveness of Tesla’s Autopilot and driver-assist features as a safety enhancement for its vehicles. Elon Musk confirmed this in a post on X, emphasizing that “Autopilot is a “major safety improvement.”
Despite the expansion of Tesla’s vehicle fleet and the introduction of more advanced Autopilot features, the company’s safety statistics have remained stable across recent quarters. Notably, in Q4 2024, Tesla reported one crash for every 5.39 million miles driven with Autopilot, although this period included winter months, which typically present more challenging driving conditions.

Earlier this year, Tesla reported one crash for every 7.63 million miles driven in Q1 2024 with Autopilot, followed by one crash for every 6.88 million miles in Q2 2024 with the same feature activated.
Autopilot is just one aspect that contributes to Tesla’s reputation as one of the safest vehicle brands on the road. With its all-electric design, Tesla vehicles demonstrate a significantly lower likelihood of rollover incidents and occupant injuries. Furthermore, their structural rigidity enhances passenger safety by allowing vehicles to withstand crashes that might prove more dangerous for other makes and models. A stark example occurred in January 2023, when a Tesla Model Y plummeted off a 250-foot cliff in California, yet all occupants emerged unharmed.
