Kia is developing a new lineup of vehicles specifically for U.S. and South Korean military forces, which includes versatile 2.5- and 5-ton trucks. Additionally, the fleet features a new off-road vehicle resembling a Humvee, inspired by Kia’s Mohave SUV, which may eventually be available for civilian use in international markets. Prototyping for this new modular platform is scheduled to commence this year, with plans for deployment in 2024, although detailed information about the all-terrain vehicle remains limited at this stage.
Due to geographical, historical, and political factors, South Korea is not a participant in NATO. However, it hosts a contingent of 28,500 U.S. Forces Korea. With North Korea, under the leadership of Kim Jong-un, as a neighbor, it’s not surprising that South Korea, home to 52 million residents, prioritizes military preparedness. Kia, the nation’s second-largest automobile manufacturer after its minority owner Hyundai, has previously manufactured a variety of military vehicles, from standard utility SUVs to large 8×8 trucks and tractors.
Kia has indicated that the Mohave platform could also be adapted for various small-scale industrial and recreational vehicles, promising “excellent body durability.” This approach echoes the original Hummer H1’s design, although the specifics of the final model are still under development.
Aiming to broaden its Purpose-Built Vehicle segment, Kia plans to leverage insights gained from military contracts to introduce advanced technologies into these vehicles. This includes an electric vehicle platform, fuel cell drivetrains, and a suite of autonomous features. The company states that its new 2.5- and 5-ton military vehicles, along with its armored offerings, will feature the latest commercial technologies, such as high-torque 7.0-liter diesel engines with automatic transmissions, anti-lock braking systems (ABS), traction control, rear parking assist, 360-degree monitors, satellite navigation, and even heated seats.
These new models are set to roll out in 2024 as part of Kia’s “Plan S.” To date, the company has delivered nine models with 100 variants, totaling 140,000 military vehicles across different weight classes, including 0.25-ton, 1.25-ton, 2.5-ton, and 5-ton vehicles. Notably, the impressive BV206 all-terrain tracked carrier and the 15-ton rescue vehicle and heavy equipment transport tractor from 2001 stand out in its military lineup.
Looking ahead to 2020, envision converting Kia’s KLTV 141 Armored Command Vehicle into a civilian recreational vehicle. Alternatively, consider an “Army Tiger” truck as your massive overland adventure vehicle—what’s there not to appreciate?
