Overview: The 2019 model year brings a host of updates to the second-generation Mazda CX-9 mid-size crossover SUV. Notable enhancements include the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a revised suspension system, and a modest price increase from the 2018 CX-9 models.

Key Information: The entry-level Sport trim starts at $32,280 and is well-equipped despite being the most affordable option. Standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels, a seven-inch infotainment screen with an updated Commander control knob, LED headlights and taillights, one-touch power windows, rear privacy glass, three-zone climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, keyless entry, and push-button ignition. It also comes with crucial safety features such as automatic emergency braking and Blind Spot Monitoring coupled with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

For those looking to enhance their ride further, the available $1,290 Sport Package adds amenities like a power driver’s seat, heated front seats and side mirrors, automatic headlights, Lane-Keep Assist, Lane-Departure Warning, radar cruise control, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Next in line is the Touring model, priced at $35,330, which includes all the features of the Sport model along with the Sport Package and additional upgrades. These include a power liftgate, leather seats, an eight-inch infotainment screen, two second-row USB ports (each at 2.1 amps), HomeLink integration, and Smart City Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection. A standout feature of the 2019 Mazda CX-9 Touring is the factory-installed Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality, providing convenient smartphone mirroring capabilities. It also features a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror.

For those willing to invest more, the Premium Package is available for an additional $2,390. This offers a power moonroof, a Bose 12-speaker audio system, three months of SiriusXM service, LED fog lights, navigation, and second-row retractable sunshades. An exciting new feature for 2019 is the SiriusXM Travel Link Services, which provides real-time traffic, weather updates, sports scores, and fuel pricing information. However, it’s worth noting that parking sensors are only available at the front with this package.

The Grand Touring model, priced at $40,840, introduces a new seven-inch TFT reconfigurable gauge cluster display—first introduced in the 2018 Mazda6 mid-size sedan. It also features ventilated front seats, new power mirrors, and a 360° View Monitor. Other standard features include an Adaptive Front-lighting System, chrome trim, roof rails, windshield wipers de-icer, 20-inch wheels, Active Driving Display with Traffic Sign Recognition, heated steering wheel, and enhanced LED interior lighting. This model is equipped with both front and rear parking sensors.

At the top of the range is the Signature model, priced at $45,365, which comes with new rear badging and LED grille lighting, along with premium touches such as Auburn Nappa leather, a hand-stitched leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Santos rosewood interior accents.

Under the Hood: Mechanically, the changes are minimal. The suspension has been refined for a quieter, smoother ride, complemented by added sound insulation with a thicker headliner and floor mats.

The powertrains remain unchanged, featuring the well-known Skyactiv-G 2.5T turbocharged engine, delivering up to 250 horsepower with 93-octane gas and 227 horsepower with 87-octane gas. Regardless of the type of fuel, the engine produces a consistent maximum torque of 310 pound-feet. All CX-9 models are equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and feature the i-ACTIV all-wheel drive system, standard on the Signature trim and optional for all other levels, costing an additional $1,800.

Release Schedule: The updated 2019 Mazda CX-9 will be available at select U.S. dealerships starting in August, while most will have to wait until September.
