The electric truck market is expanding rapidly, with each month bringing new developments. This year marked the beginning of production for the GMC Hummer EV and the Rivian R1T, while the Ford F-150 Lightning is set to launch in spring 2022. Additionally, there has been considerable buzz surrounding the Chevy Silverado EV, but what we are seeing in this teaser is actually the battery-operated GMC Sierra, anticipated to arrive in 2023.

This brings up a noteworthy point, as GMC has revealed that the Sierra EV will be its third electric vehicle, following the Hummer pickup and SUV—a model that is expected in 2024. Therefore, it is clear that the Sierra variant will take a couple more years before it goes into production.

In a 19-second teaser, we get a closer glimpse at one of General Motors’ more practical electric pickups. The front design of the Sierra EV closely resembles that of the conventional truck it likely shares components with, though it features a more pronounced use of LED lighting, similar to the grille and headlight arrangement of the F-150 Lightning. The Sierra EV indeed boasts a bright front appearance, albeit without the continuous brow we see on its competitor from across town.

A noticeable crease can be observed at the top of the grille transitioning to the hood, which gives the Sierra EV an aerodynamic profile. More styling elements like this can be expected to enhance its air performance, ultimately aiming to improve driving range. While it may appear minor, drag plays just as significant a role in range as battery capacity and electric motor performance do.

Though it hasn’t been officially confirmed, it’s reasonable to speculate that the Sierra EV will feature four-wheel steering, similar to its electric Chevy Silverado counterpart. It will be built on the Ultium platform, which indicates that it will incorporate GM’s proprietary batteries that are expected to allow a full-size pickup to travel up to 400 miles on a single charge.

GM plans to showcase the Silverado EV at next month’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, so further details are on the horizon. While we may have to wait a bit longer for the full launch of the Sierra EV, it is indeed on its way.
