AMG may need to stay vigilant as BMW M appears to be preparing to challenge its Project One hypercar.

As reported by Autocar, BMW is on the verge of entering the hybrid hypercar market with a street-legal race car of its own. Dirk Hacker, Vice President of BMW M, stated, “We would like to create a standalone vehicle, and we are capable of doing so. However, there is currently no market demand for it.” He added, “Our focus is more on advancing future mobility and digitization rather than on developing a hypercar. That said, if we choose to produce a super sports car, we certainly have the capacity.”

Given BMW’s role as the official manufacturer for Formula E, the idea of a high-performance electric BMW that surpasses the i8’s 357 horsepower seems not only fitting but also likely.

Hacker also noted that if such a vehicle were to materialize, it would take some time before it would be ready for production.

“Formula E could be an intriguing opportunity for us. M vehicles have a strong connection to racing. As more manufacturers get involved, it presents a fascinating challenge, and there’s definitely potential for our engineering team to contribute to the series,” Hacker shared with Autocar.
