As crossovers continue to dominate the automotive market, performance crossovers are emerging as the next trend among enthusiasts. While many manufacturers struggle to truly embody the “Sport” in Sport Utility Vehicle, Mercedes-AMG has been consistently creating high-performance versions of its SUVs, ranging from the iconic G-Class to the newer GLC that replaces the GLK. In 2015, the expansive M-Class received a significant performance boost with the introduction of the AMG-tuned GLE Coupe. Building on its success, the GLE Coupe is set to receive enhancements for the 2018 model year, proving that performance can harmoniously coexist with the SUV segment.

This week, Mercedes-Benz USA unveiled new information about the Alabama-produced 2018 GLE43 and GLE63 S Coupe models in a press release. Both variants will feature two new premium interior designs at no additional charge and offer a selection of 11 paint colors.

The powertrains of both models have been enhanced, with the GLE43 now boasting a 3.0-liter V6 Biturbo engine that delivers 385 horsepower, while the GLE63 S features a potent 5.5-liter Biturbo V8 that generates an impressive 577 horsepower.

Both models are equipped with Mercedes-AMG’s advanced 4MATIC® all-wheel drive system, enabling quicker cornering speeds. Alongside AIRMATIC® air suspension and active anti-roll bars, these vehicles can handle turns at higher speeds with minimal body lean.

The GLE43 Coupe comes with a 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, which is recognized for its broad range of driver-friendly gearing options. In contrast, the GLE63 features the 7G-TRONIC semi-automatic transmission, providing shift speeds and responsiveness that rival many dual-clutch gearboxes.

The GLE Coupe offers three different packages that provide various visual upgrades and driver assistance features. The AMG Performance Studio Package enhances the vehicle’s appearance with options for up to six exterior colors at once. The Premium 1 package prioritizes safety, incorporating technologies like Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist, and Automatic Braking. The Parking Assist package includes Park Pilot features and a 360-degree camera to facilitate parking the large GLE in tight spots.

The GLE43 is priced at $70,500, while the GLE63 Coupe starts at $111,860, and both models are now available at dealerships across the United States.
