When creating a 3,000-horsepower Nissan GT-R drag car, you aim to dominate the competition. Extreme Turbo Systems showcased their powerful project at a competition in Colorado this July, where they achieved a record-breaking speed of 255 mph in a standing half-mile run. Recently, they returned to a drag strip in Oregon, where they secured another accolade—a phenomenal quarter-mile run in just 6.88 seconds at an impressive 222 mph, both records on a global scale.
To put it into perspective, the ETS GT-R accelerates from 0 to 222 mph faster than many crossovers and economy vehicles do from 0 to 60 mph. This extraordinary performance is the culmination of years of refinement and a competitive rivalry with AMS Performance, who previously set an all-wheel-drive quarter-mile record in March with their own Nissan GT-R, boasting over 2,500 horsepower. Clearly, ETS was determined to surpass that achievement.
A video by That Racing Channel on YouTube captures the team making three runs, starting with a “lower power pass” to assess traction, which still recorded a remarkable time of 7.29 seconds at 187 mph. For the second attempt, they increased the boost to unprecedented levels, resulting in a record-breaking 6.91-second run at 195 mph—highlighted by a tense moment when the tires lost traction in fourth gear and the GT-R veered sideways. Driver Lucas English, the unsung hero of the day, skillfully regained control with just inches to spare, aided by the drag chute.
On a cool, damp morning, the ETS team decided against reducing power and opted to wait for the sun to emerge and warm the track. Once conditions improved, they successfully executed a remarkable 6.88 second, 222 mph quarter-mile run. If progress continues at this pace, we may soon witness a 5-second Nissan GT-R in the AMS-ETS rivalry next year. We’ll be eagerly awaiting the outcome.
