The first-generation Acura NSX is still celebrated today for challenging Ferrari and establishing itself as a competent performance vehicle, known for its outstanding handling and classic design. In contrast, the second generation, which debuted in 2016, prioritized power over weight and integrated a state-of-the-art hybrid system. Acura has announced that the current version will soon retire, with the limited-edition NSX Type S set to be unveiled at Monterey Car Week on August 12.

Details are still limited, as Acura is holding back key information for the official reveal. However, it is clear that the Type S aims to enhance the existing NSX in various significant ways. According to Acura’s press release, the new model is designed to provide increased power, faster acceleration, and better handling. Thus, improvements to the engine, suspension modifications, and aerodynamic enhancements are expected. Acura also emphasizes that the Type S will deliver “a more emotional driving experience,” so we anticipate potential surprises in this area.

The standard NSX already produces a remarkable 500 horsepower from its 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. With the hybrid system, the total output reaches an impressive 573 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. Capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds and reaching speeds over 190 mph, the current model is notably fast. Enhanced performance in the Type S will likely excite fans of the existing model.

This car is anticipated to showcase the pinnacle of the second-generation NSX platform. Enthusiasts who wish to see a return to the pure, naturally aspirated, manual-shifting character of the original NSX may feel let down, but fans of the modern hybrid powertrains and all-wheel grip will likely appreciate the Type S. All NSX models in the 2022 lineup will be Type S, with production limited to just 350 units, of which 300 will be available for sale in the United States. With over 60% of second-generation NSX sales occurring in the US, it seems fitting that the majority of Type S units will be offered here.

The Type S model is part of a broader strategy to revive the Type S branding, following the recent launches of the TLX Type S sedan and the MDX Type S crossover earlier this year. Emile Korkor, Assistant Vice President at Acura National Sales, emphasizes that this is a move to reinstate Acura’s performance reputation, remarking, “There’s more to come as Type S becomes the ultimate expression of performance across the Acura lineup.”

If you’ve been deliberating on acquiring a new NSX, Acura has set a deadline on your choice. A 2022 model is available, but only 350 will be produced before the second generation is phased out permanently. Orders will officially open on August 12, coinciding with the reveal, allowing those interested in securing a Type S to do so online at Acura.com/NSX.
