Acura recently showcased the conclusion of its NSX hybrid supercar line at Monterey Car Week with the introduction of the 2022 Acura NSX Type S. This model features modestly enhanced power and torque, updated styling, and several performance improvements. The NSX Type S will stand as the sole NSX offered in its final production year, aligning with Acura’s Type S resurgence, which also includes the TLX sedan and MDX SUV.

The NSX Type S’s hybrid powertrain now generates 600 horsepower and 492 pound-feet of torque, marking increases of 27 hp and 16 pound-feet, respectively. These upgrades are the result of new turbochargers from the NSX GT3 Evo race car, increased boost by six percent, new fuel injectors, and improved intercoolers, along with a hybrid battery that has seen a 20 percent rise in capacity and a 10 percent increase in output.

The two electric motors that drive the front axle (the NSX has a total of three e-motors) now have reduced gear ratios by 20 percent, enabling more dynamic launches. Additionally, the nine-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission of the vehicle can now upshift 50 percent faster and features a new Rapid Downshift Mode that instantly selects the lowest gear when the left paddle is pressed. The Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system continues to deliver torque vectoring, and both the NSX’s driving modes and active engine sounds have been refined and enhanced.

The front and rear tracks have been widened slightly, fitted with new wheels that use improved Pirelli P Zero tires. The adaptive dampers have been recalibrated, and a carbon fiber roof has become standard equipment, lowering the vehicle’s center of gravity.

In terms of weight, Acura now offers an optional $13,000 Lightweight Package that includes carbon-ceramic brakes, a carbon engine cover, carbon interior trim, and a total weight reduction of 58 pounds.

Thanks to these enhancements, the Type S is reported to lap Honda’s home circuit at Suzuka a full two seconds faster than the 2021 NSX.

Aesthetically, the NSX Type S features new carbon-fiber front and rear fascias designed for improved aerodynamics, as well as a rear diffuser influenced by the NSX GT3 race car. Standard features now include black door handles, mirror caps, exhaust tips, and badges, along with a unique matte Gotham Gray paint option available exclusively for 70 units.

Interestingly, the images released by Acura do not provide a clear view of the interior. However, from a partially obscured and red image of the steering wheel, it appears that the NSX’s interior remains unchanged, still utilizing the older-generation Honda infotainment system.

The starting price of the 2022 Acura NSX Type S is $169,500, which is an increase of $12,000 over the outgoing non-Type S model. For those opting for the Lightweight Package, the price rises to $182,500. Only 350 units will be produced, with 300 allocated for the U.S. market.
