Ram’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, which features eTorque technology, earned a spot on WardsAuto’s 10 Best Engines list for 2019, standing out alongside innovative engines like Infiniti’s renowned Variable Compression Turbo engine.

The editors at WardsAuto recognized the eTorque-equipped Pentastar for its remarkable performance and fuel efficiency. They were particularly impressed by the seamless operation of features such as the stop-start system and power gap augmentation when integrated with Ram’s powertrain. This new mild-hybrid technology enhances fuel economy without compromising engine performance.

Drew Winter, senior content director at WardsAuto, praised the Pentastar V6 with eTorque, stating, “This engine highlights how electric elements can enhance traditional engines, creating impressive results.” He noted that the all-new 48-volt mild-hybrid eTorque system offers a boost of electrical power during acceleration and gear shifts, resulting in smooth power delivery to the wheels and improved fuel efficiency.

Winter further pointed out that the judges recorded fuel economy figures between 21 to 22 miles per gallon, which is impressive for a full-size, four-wheel-drive pickup. He added that the eTorque system enables the Ram’s fuel-saving stop-start feature to operate almost unnoticed, stating it is among the best available.

The eTorque system replaces the standard alternator with a belt-driven motor connected to a 48-volt battery pack. This setup not only enhances fuel efficiency and performance but also captures energy during braking to recharge the battery. Additionally, it boosts the towing capacity and payload of the half-ton Ram 1500. The engine still includes a conventional 12-volt starter for cold starts and initial starts of the day, aligning with its efficient design.

In its configuration for the 2019 Ram 1500 truck, the engine delivers a powerful output of 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque..
