Another day, another record shattered at the Nurburgring. The competition among global automakers continues to heat up at this iconic German racetrack, with McLaren recently taking the lead. The brand’s P1 LM has achieved an impressive new lap time of 6:43, setting a high bar for competitors.

While McLaren previously refrained from publishing the official time for its standard P1 road vehicle, opting to remain neutral in the ongoing Nurburgring record rivalry, that has changed. Now, McLaren has confidently unleashed the P1 LM and its skilled driver, Kenny Bräck, onto the track. Bräck also holds the official record for the road car set during the Goodwood Hill Climb, showcasing his prowess behind the wheel of the McLaren P1 LM.

This latest achievement has dethroned the Lamborghini Huracan Performante, which had recorded a lap time of 6:52, a mark that was sufficient to surpass the previous record of 6:57 held by the Porsche 918, established in 2013. However, doubts surrounding the Huracan Performante’s record have lingered, with some questioning its legitimacy. With the P1 LM’s time now on the books, those debates may fade, as it clearly outperforms both the Lamborghini and Porsche. Some analysts believe the lap could have even been quicker than 6:43, pointing to a late throttle application seen in the video at around 1:45 as a potential for improvement.

Only six units of the P1 LM, including the XP1LM prototype, have been produced, with all five customer vehicles already sold. These cars will be delivered to buyers located in the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates. Given the nature of such elite vehicles, it’s hoped that McLaren has chosen purchasers who will ensure they are used to their full potential, rather than relegated to a museum display.
