On a recent episode of the Club Shay Shay podcast, John Cena revealed that he attempted to build a replica of a Lamborghini Diablo two decades ago. Although the project got off to a rocky start, Cena remained persistent. After 20 years of switching shops and plans, he finally received his fake Diablo VT, only to immediately list it for sale on Bring a Trailer.
In the podcast episode, which aired about a month ago, Cena shared, “I just got the keys to that car a week ago.” While the exact recording date is unknown, it appears he hasn’t had the completed model for very long. One might expect that after enduring numerous challenges for two decades, the wrestling and movie star would want to keep the replica Diablo for himself. Instead, it is currently listed without a reserve on the auction site.
Although Cena’s replica features a fiberglass body, it closely resembles the original Diablo. While the front lip, rear wing, and air ducts are somewhat off, spotting the differences side by side with a genuine Diablo VT can be challenging. True Lamborghini enthusiasts might catch the distinctions at a glance, but many car lovers may struggle to identify any flaws in person. The interior also resembles that of the original, despite some peculiar proportions and unique switchgear. One minor point of irritation might be the presence of plaques on the doors that read “Disegno Marcello Gandini,” but that may just be a personal quibble.
What doesn’t quite measure up, however, is the engine. Instead of the iconic V12 engine found in the Diablo, Cena’s replica is equipped with a BMW V12 from an 8 Series or 1990s 7 Series. The car’s listing includes a video clip that showcases its engine sound, which, although pleasant, lacks the exhilarating quality of a true Lamborghini. The engine is connected to a Porsche-sourced five-speed manual transaxle.
In general, most car enthusiasts might overlook a replica Lamborghini. However, one that belonged to John Cena carries more intrigue, especially with its amusing and unusual 20-year journey. It’s fortunate that Cena shared the backstory on a podcast, adding depth to the vehicle for its future owner.
