The automotive community was left stunned and somewhat amused after footage surfaced showing a McLaren 720S driver recklessly crashing his $290,000 supercar into a parked Audi R8 in Toronto. Recently, another video recorded from the passenger seat of the McLaren has emerged, providing further insights into the incident that has many shaking their heads.

When the original video went viral on social media and car forums, context was scarce. This clip depicted a gleaming McLaren 720S revving its powerful twin-turbo V8, speeding off, and crashing directly into a shiny Audi R8 parked at the side of the road. Questions arose: What were both high-end cars doing on that street? Where was the Audi’s owner? How could anyone drive in such a foolish manner?

Fortunately, new information from local news source 680 News has clarified aspects of the crash. The two cars were involved in a larger photo shoot on April 21 at Polson Pier in Toronto, and when certain participants were delayed, the McLaren driver volunteered to give others a ride while waiting. It seemed like a kind gesture, but it turned out to be disastrous.

The passenger who recorded the last ride of the McLaren, identified only as “Mike,” told 680 News that he wasn’t familiar with the driver, who he described as someone who “punched it all the way” and lacked experience with high-powered rear-wheel-drive vehicles. The McLaren 720S, while rated at 710 horsepower, can be unforgiving to inexperienced drivers.

“It was a frightening experience… I wasn’t even looking at the speedometer and had no idea how fast we were going, so I couldn’t assess the impact we were about to feel,” he recounted.

Mike continued recording after the collision, which largely wrecked the front ends of both cars. As he filmed the damaged luxury parts scattered across the street, he observed the McLaren driver running towards the Audi, where two people were inside but thankfully unharmed, then back to the McLaren before disappearing from sight. Since then, he hasn’t been seen, and police mentioned to 680 News that an investigation is ongoing.

Officers did discover the man’s Chinese passport inside the wrecked McLaren, indicating that it won’t be long before he is held accountable for his reckless driving.
