Kia’s American division has unveiled the confirmed specifications for the U.S. version of its new EV6 electric crossover, a vehicle we have seen previously. Key highlights of Kia’s first fully electric production car include a maximum range of up to 300 miles, the ability to charge from 10 to 80 percent (or about 210 miles of range) in less than 18 minutes with DC fast charging, and impressive acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds for the flagship GT variant. With access to DC fast charging, drivers can expect to add nearly 70 miles of range in under five minutes, while Level 2 charging will fully recharge the larger battery option from 10 to 100 percent in seven hours and 10 minutes.
The EV6 will be available in single-motor rear-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations. Rear-wheel-drive models will feature a 160-kilowatt rear motor and offer two battery options: a 58.0 kilowatt-hour battery providing 167 horsepower or a 77.4 kWh battery delivering 218 horsepower. Choosing the all-wheel-drive variant adds a front motor rated at 70 kW, resulting in a total output of 313 horsepower and a 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of 5.1 seconds. All all-wheel-drive EV6s come equipped with the larger 77.4-kWh battery as standard.
The GT variant enhances both motors, featuring a 160 kW front motor and a powerful 270 kW rear motor, which produces a total of 576 horsepower and matches the 0 to 60 mph time of 3.5 seconds. For context, this acceleration is comparable to that claimed by Ford and Tesla for the Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition and the Model Y Performance.
With a wheelbase of 114.2 inches—similar to the Telluride—the EV6 is as wide as the Mach-E and shares the same wheelbase and ground clearance as the Model Y, highlighting the competition Kia sees for the EV6. Notably, the EV6 may appear the least like a crossover among its peers, featuring body-colored fenders that contribute to a visually lower profile.
Similar to Ford’s hybrid F-150’s Pro Power Onboard and the Genesis Electrified G80, the EV6 features a vehicle-to-load function that transforms it into a mobile generator with a 1,900-watt output.
The 2022 EV6 marks the beginning of Kia’s electric vehicle initiative, with plans to introduce 11 new electrified models globally by 2026. Initial EV6 models are set to arrive at U.S. dealerships in the early months of 2022, while the performance-oriented GT version will be available later next year. Enthusiastic Kia fans can also look forward to the First Edition EV6, an all-wheel-drive special edition limited to just 1,500 units, featuring standard augmented-reality HUD, 20-inch wheels, a 14-speaker Meridian audio system, and an exclusive yellow color option, along with bragging rights in the Kia EV online community.
