After many years away from the sports car arena, Toyota is set to make a significant return. In a recent conversation with Evo, Tetsuya Tada, a Toyota engineer and head of Gazoo Racing, revealed that the automaker plans to introduce a lineup of three sports cars, complemented by various special-edition performance models.
This new lineup, referred to as the “Three Brothers,” will include the well-known Toyota GT 86 (the same vehicle previously known as the Scion FR-S in the U.S. and the Subaru BRZ), the much-anticipated Supra, which is said to be a collaborative effort between Toyota and BMW, and a modern iteration of the MR2. The MR2 is expected to take inspiration from the Toyota SF-R concept showcased at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, as noted by Evo.
Tada, known for his expertise in lightweight sports car design, is aiming to integrate a hybrid powertrain into the MR2 due to stricter emission regulations. This technology will likely draw from the advanced systems used in Toyota’s LMP1 racing cars, according to Evo. With the Mazda Miata currently dominating the market for small, accessible, lightweight sports cars, the emergence of Toyota’s offerings will introduce exciting competition.
