McLaren thrilled audiences of all ages last month at the Goodwood Festival of Speed by showcasing a life-size replica of the 2018 McLaren 720S, which was constructed almost entirely out of Lego. To further engage fans, the company has released a timelapse video that captures the remarkable assembly process—a true spectacle of plastic artistry.
To bring this creation to life, McLaren shared computer-aided design (CAD) data with Lego to accurately assess the necessary quantities and types of bricks. They then enlisted a skilled team of professional Lego builders, known as Bright Bricks, who dedicated approximately 2,000 hours and used 280,000 bricks to meticulously assemble the model atop a steel frame, complete with a genuine set of Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires.
In comparison, the McLaren factory can manufacture an authentic 720S from scratch in just 12 days, highlighting that this impressive construction is far more than just a large, 3,200-pound toy car (it even weighs more than the actual vehicle). While it is slightly disappointing that the interior and engine were not included in the model, the builders successfully demonstrated the robustness of their design by comfortably supporting their weight on the hood and roof.
The final touches on the model involved attendees at Goodwood adding the last 13,000 bricks during a charity event, which raised over $3,000 according to McLaren.
