Following the release of a teaser image of its new UX crossover last week, Lexus has provided a detailed overview of this compact SUV at the Geneva Motor Show. Here’s everything you need to know about the latest addition to the Lexus lineup.
Upon its launch, the vehicle will be available in two versions: the UX 200 and the UX 250h hybrid. The UX 200 is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 168 horsepower and utilizes what Lexus refers to as a Direct Shift-CVT. This system is a refined version of the continuously variable transmission, employing a separate gearset for smoother acceleration from a stop, promising a more direct and linear driving experience compared to traditional belt-and-pulley systems. In contrast, the UX 250h boasts a combined output of 176 horsepower and features all-wheel drive.
While performance specifications are important, many potential UX buyers may prioritize the interior experience. Lexus has incorporated traditional Japanese design principles in the UX’s cabin layout and materials. Designed with comfort and user-friendliness in mind, the interior can feature sashiko leather and washi grain trim. While the specifics might be unclear, these features could impress your Japan-loving friends during your next outing.
The UX is built on Toyota’s GA-C platform, which it shares with both the Toyota C-HR and the Prius. This foundation reportedly provides the UX with an exceptionally low center of gravity, which Lexus claims is the lowest in its class. Additionally, MacPherson struts in the front and double wishbone suspension at the rear, combined with meticulously tuned damper oil, seals, and friction control, enhance the driving dynamics of the UX.
For those who desire a sportier experience, an F Sport variant will be available when the UX launches. This model not only presents a more aggressive aesthetic but also comes with a refined, adaptive suspension that tightens during turns and relaxes on straight paths. Inside, the UX F Sport features sport seats, an instrument cluster inspired by the Lexus LFA, and enhanced engine sound to replicate the sensations of a traditional automatic transmission shifting gears.
While official pricing details are not yet available, the anticipated starting price for the 2019 Lexus UX is around $30,000.
