As the Beijing Auto Show approaches later this month, Lexus has offered a sneak peek of the next-generation ES midsize sedan, focusing on its debated spindle grille design. While the reveal is limited, it shares a resemblance to the vehicle spotted under swirling camouflage in Kentucky back in February.
For those who can’t resist the urge to drop Predator jokes in the comments, yes, Lexus is moving forward with its divisive grille design. Believe it or not, many of the brand’s customers actually enjoy this aesthetic.
Moreover, the upcoming ES is expected to share a platform with the Toyota Camry, mirroring its predecessor. However, this time, it will likely utilize the New Global Architecture K platform from its parent company, which also supports the sporty new Camry, as well as the latest Avalon and RAV4 models.
With recent reports indicating that the upscale, rear-wheel-drive GS is being discontinued in Europe, speculation has arisen that the front-wheel-drive ES could be revamped to fill its role. Although Lexus has confirmed to The Drive that the GS will still be available in the U.S., there are doubts regarding its future, especially with reports of a new sportier, all-wheel-drive F-Sport model for the ES, as suggested by a purported Lexus employee on Reddit. It wouldn’t be surprising if the new ES evolves into a hybrid of the ES and GS, reminiscent of Acura’s integration of the TSX and TL into the TLX back in 2014. We’ll have to wait for further updates.
Currently, the ES begins at $38,950, and the complete unveiling of the 2019 Lexus ES will take place on April 25 in Beijing.
