Within just 30 seconds of conversing with Chris Prelog, the charismatic president of Windstar Cruises, you can sense his passion for French Polynesia. He openly shares that this enchanting region ranks as his most cherished destination in the world.
While the breathtaking natural beauty of French Polynesia undoubtedly makes it a beloved spot for many travelers, Prelog’s affection reaches deeper.
“The first visit is for the stunning scenery, but the second is for the people,” he explains. “During that first trip, you realized you’re not merely exploring a culture; you’re engaging with the locals’ lives. It’s a seamless transition in Tahiti. … Early in my career, I was struck by how laid-back and welcoming everyone is, and how much love they show. That experience took root in me.”
And that root has become firmly established. In our profile of Chris, he recalls his inaugural cruise contract, which was quite challenging, and how a stop at Bora Bora inspired him to persevere.
With Windstar expanding its presence in French Polynesia — Star Breeze is set to sail year-round with itineraries featuring the Society Islands, including Moorea, Bora Bora, and Tahiti, along with journeys to the Cook Islands, the Tuamotos, Tonga, and the Marquesas, and Wind Star joining the fleet in 2027 — Chris is the ideal person to share recommendations for his beloved spots.
“Everyone adores Bora Bora, the real gem of French Polynesia. However, I often seek out the lesser-known destinations. I have a fondness for Huahine. Its forests, beaches, and vibrant culture create a unique charm. Being a bit off the beaten path adds to its calm and serene atmosphere, making it a hidden gem with ample opportunities for adventure, from jet skiing to exciting ATV rides. There’s more to it than just sunbathing on the beach.”
Here are Chris’ top experiences in French Polynesia. If you share a love for Tahiti and French Polynesia, please share your own tips and discoveries in the comments section below.
Arriving in French Polynesia
My wife, Silke, and I always plan a pre- (and often post-) cruise stay at the Intercontinental after our eight-hour flight from Los Angeles or San Francisco. As a cruise executive, I appreciate their warm welcome with an incredible pineapple drink and the stunning lobby that overlooks the resort, offering splendid views of Moorea across the water. It truly sets the tone for the entire journey.
A key highlight of arriving is being welcomed at the Tahiti airport by Fifi, my favorite driver, who greets me with a broad smile and an even bigger hug.
More than pearls in Taha’a
Taha’a holds a special place in my heart. I feel at my closest to paradise there as it is simply picture-perfect. I love to visit the remote side of the motu to take in the serene views (and capture stunning photos with a palm tree framing the Star Legend).
What to eat in the islands
My favorite dish in Tahiti is Poisson Cru, a dish found in nearly every restaurant. I could realistically enjoy it three times a day due to its delightful combination of fresh flavors like coconut and vanilla. Even when I land, feeling a bit weary and jet-lagged, I’ll often indulge in it via room service.
Onboard Star Breeze, an absolute highlight is the sail away ritual
For sail away, I always head to Deck 8, which provides stunning 360-degree views. I love sharing this experience with our guests and gathering their thoughts from different perspectives. I am always present during sail away!
On Huahine, the opposite of a beach day
On Huahine Iti, I enjoy the ATV tour, which takes you through the island’s lush agricultural areas. The “Scenic Huahine by ATV” tour includes stops at significant sites like the ancient Polynesian temple of Marae Manunue and Belvedere, offering breathtaking views over Maroe Bay.
I thought I knew a lot about French Polynesia — and then I discovered the Marquesas!
On a recent trip aboard Star Breeze, we visited the Marquesas Islands, one of the most exotic locations in an already remote region of the world. The local inhabitants were incredibly welcoming, and the scenery showcased a mix of jagged peaks and dense forests, particularly highlighted by cultural festivities like tribal dances. Be sure to experience the unique black sand beaches, especially at Atuona in Hika Ova.
