Undoubtedly, the R35 Nissan GT-R is the reigning champion of drag racing in Japan. Just last month, the Alpha Logic GT-R, piloted by Mohammed Al Baker, reached an impressive speed of 248 mph over a half-mile stretch on an airstrip in Qatar. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, the AMS Performance GT-R recorded a stunning 6.937-second quarter-mile at the TX2K17 event. However, before the GT-Rs took center stage with their record-breaking performances, another powerhouse dominated the tuning drag racing scene for over 20 years—the legendary 2JZ engine.

Recently, the YouTube channel 1320video traveled to Puerto Rico to witness the fastest Supra in the half-mile. Equipped with a 3.0-liter 2JZ engine and an 86mm turbo, the Momentum Auto Works MKIV Supra previously achieved a record speed of 214 mph in a half-mile run. The team aimed to push the limits further at the Puerto Rico Half Mile Event, hoping to reach 218 mph or even 220 mph.

Sadly, the turbocharger failed at the end of their first attempt. While this setback would typically halt progress for most teams, Momentum was ready with a second Supra that had similar specifications, allowing them to continue competing while repairs were made to the initial vehicle.

Throughout the day, Momentum Auto Works attempted numerous runs, recording top speeds of 205 mph in the black Supra and 204 mph in the white one. However, they couldn’t achieve the run they were aiming for. Despite several challenges with the turbo, nitrous system, and gearbox, the engine endured intense use without any significant issues, showcasing the exceptional durability of the 2JZ engines.

Take a look at the half-mile runs from the Momentum Auto Works MKIV Supras in the video below. As an added treat, don’t miss 1320video’s footage featuring a 1986 MKIII Supra that reached 185 mph. Like the 2JZs from Momentum Auto Works, this old-school MKIII also completed countless passes on the half-mile track effortlessly.
