In recent years, Volkswagen has frequently discussed the revival of the Bus model, but little action has been taken until now. At the Detroit Auto Show last week, they unveiled the I.D. Buzz concept, an all-electric vehicle reminiscent of the classic Aircooled model. Sources from Automotive News indicate that a new Microbus resembling this prototype could debut as soon as 2022.

VW Brand Chief Herbert Diess is reportedly eager to produce a new Bus. An insider revealed to AN that he believes this model could evoke fond memories associated with the VW brand. “I know what you’re going to ask, and the answer is 2022. [VW brand chief Herbert Diess] wants it,” the source shared. This move could also help the company shift attention away from the ongoing Dieselgate scandal.

As Volkswagen embraces electric technology, they plan to modernize the beloved classic. They recently confirmed a shift towards electric vehicles, with plans to start U.S. production by 2021. The I.D. Hatchback, which may share a platform with the new Microbus, is expected to launch in 2020, allowing VW time to refine the technology since their current all-electric offering is the e-Golf. The design will feature contemporary elements while maintaining the traditional Bus layout, making use of compact battery cells and suspension parts to optimize space for passengers and cargo.

Eventually, the new Microbus is expected to include autonomous driving capabilities as well. Although VW hasn’t been as active in the development of driverless cars as some competitors, both VW and Audi have conducted significant testing. An autonomous Bus is anticipated to be ready by 2025, which could further enhance its appeal and reputation as a standout model for Volkswagen.
