Recently, Subaru took an ambitious step by bringing its WRX STI Type RA NBR race car to the Nürburgring in an effort to capture the record for the fastest four-door lap. This 600-horsepower vehicle is an upgraded model of the car that previously set the lap record at the Isle of Man last year.

Currently, the fastest four-door lap record is held by the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. Last September, the Giulia reclaimed its title after a brief loss to the Porsche Panamera Turbo. The Giulia, with its automatic transmission, decisively took back the record, surpassing the Porsche’s time by six seconds and establishing a striking new benchmark of 7 minutes and 32 seconds.

Unfortunately, Subaru faced challenging weather conditions during its attempt at the Nürburgring, which made breaking any records unlikely. The rain was so heavy that even achieving a wet track record seemed implausible. Despite this, Subaru decided to proceed with the run, entrusting the wheel to 25-year-old Richie Stanaway, a driver experienced on the Nürburgring and at Le Mans. With a remarkable car and a skilled driver available, Subaru opted to create a video showcasing the modified STI performing on the drenched track.

However, while watching the video, I was surprised to find myself double-checking whether it was produced by Subaru or a YouTube amateur. The automaker appears to be employing similar techniques to those often used by fans on the video platform, including specific camera angles, background music, and on-screen text. While the intent to connect with the tuner community is clear, it feels slightly overdone.

On a positive note, enthusiasts will soon have the opportunity to purchase their very own Subaru WRX STI Type RA.
