Title: Unique 1976 Cadillac Mirage Ute Available for Auction
A distinctive vehicle has caught the eye of collectors and enthusiasts alike—a 1976 Cadillac Mirage Ute, currently listed for sale on the auction site Bring a Trailer. This eye-catching model originated as a Cadillac Coupe de Ville and showcases a blend of luxury and utility.
From the front, the unmistakable lines of the original Coupe de Ville are evident, but the rear reveals a surprising transformation. Instead of the traditional back seat and trunk, it features a sturdy bulkhead just behind the front seats and a spacious bed area, providing the functionality of a high-end El Camino without actually being one.
This Cadillac has an interesting conversion journey; unlike many DIY modifications, this car was professionally transformed by Traditional Coachworks, based in Chatsworth, California. Known for converting Sedan de Villes into wagons, they crafted this Mirage model, which was then sold through Cadillac’s official dealer network. Unlike the Chevrolet El Camino, this Cadillac also offers extra storage beneath the rear portion of the bed for items like a spare tire.
This specific Mirage Ute has undergone a complete restoration. The interior from the bulkhead forward has been refurbished by Slick Creations located in Jonesboro, Georgia. Although the original instrument cluster has been replaced with a modern digital version, the rest of the interior retains the classic luxury of the 1970s, complete with wood trim and distinctive Cadillac plastics. Additionally, the vehicle boasts a revitalized drivetrain, featuring a 512 cubic-inch overbored engine coupled with a rebuilt Turbo Hydramatic automatic transmission, both services provided by Jack Merkel Performance Engines in Hauppauge, New York.
For those interested in the restoration process and history of the vehicle, detailed photos, along with images of its original Firethorn Red paint (it is now finished in Mercedes-Benz Crystal Laurit Silver Metallic), can be found on the auction listing on Bring a Trailer.
