The 2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI 380 S is a limited-edition model available for just one year in North America. Now in its eighth generation, the Golf first launched in 1983 as a successor to the Rabbit and has built a strong reputation among driving enthusiasts.
This special edition marks the end of the line for the 6-speed manual transmission, which will not be available in future Golf GTI models after the 2024 production run. While the Golf will continue to be produced post-2024, all subsequent versions will feature a semi-automatic transmission. Let’s not sugarcoat it—the quick-shifting automatic may be efficient, but it can’t replicate the true manual experience.

The 2024 Golf GTI 380 S hatchback beckons drivers with enthusiasm; it craves the open road. We spent a week enjoying this car, exploring both the freeways and winding mountain roads of Southern California. Volkswagen, we hope you reconsider and keep this gem around!
Turbocharged Enthusiasm
With a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, the Golf GTI 380 S produces 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, driving the front wheels through a smooth-shifting 6-speed manual with an easy-to-use clutch. If you seek more power and traction, the 2024 Mk8 Golf R offers 315 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque with standard all-wheel drive.
The GTI’s maximum torque comes in at 1,750 rpm, but the real excitement lies in the performance range between 3,500 and 6,000 rpm, particularly in the 2nd to 4th gears. Our acceleration test showed a respectable 0-60 time of 5.1 seconds, but the true joy of owning a Golf GTI isn’t just about straight-line speed.
The Core of the GTI
Starting in first gear unlocks an exhilarating ride as you shift through the gears. Seek out sweeping curves and tight turns to fully appreciate the car’s performance. Ignore the upshift/downshift indicator on the dashboard; it’s designed to take the fun out of being high revs.
The clutch operates smoothly, and the transmission offers short throws, making it easy to launch from a standstill without needing to press the accelerator. This is particularly helpful in stop-and-go traffic, reducing the strain on your leg.
According to EPA estimates, the Golf GTI 380 S achieves 23 miles per gallon in the city, 34 on the highway, and 27 combined. Over our testing, which was often spirited, we averaged 25 mpg over 231 miles, but managed 33.7 mpg on two highway runs.
Driving Experience: Avoid the Straight Line
The 3,137-pound Golf GTI boasts a nimble, lightweight feel thanks to the Bridgestone Potenza S005 235/43R summer performance tires mounted on 19-inch aluminum wheels. This hatchback clings to the road!
Ready for the twists and turns, the well-balanced steering with progressive variable-ratio electric power assist provides precise handling. The various driving modes—Comfort, Sport, and Custom—allow drivers to adjust steering weight and throttle response to their preference.
Its four-wheel independent multi-link sport suspension ensures a smooth ride while still being sporty. The electronic differential lock helps enhance handling precision, allowing for smooth transitions through curves without racing interference.
With a tight turning radius of 38.1 feet, it handles seamlessly in tight spots. The braking system—comprising of a four-wheel anti-lock system and power-assisted disks—delivers confident stopping power, with eye-catching red calipers that peek through the multi-spoke black wheels.
Sport Interior
The 2024 Golf GTI comes in three trims: S, SE, and Autobahn. Our review focused on the GTI 380 S, where performance meets practicality.
The driver’s focus is front and center here, featuring heated sport front seats that include manual adjustments and power recline. Covered in durable black cloth with a Titan Black and plaid design, the seats provide comfort and support cornering. There’s ample seat travel for taller drivers, and without a sunroof, headroom is generous. The adjustable shoulder belts ensure comfort without neck strain.
The rear seats comfortably accommodate two adults—or three in a pinch—and include USB ports and adjustable climate vents. Cargo versatility shines with 19.9 cubic feet of storage available when the rear seats are upright, expanding to 34.5 cubic feet when you fold them down.
Stainless steel pedal covers and carpeted floor mats add a nice touch to the sporty interior.
Digital Cockpit
The 10.25-inch configurable digital display provides key information with ease, including speed and boost gauges, while the central 8.25-inch touchscreen controls the rearview camera and audio system. Various controls allow for seamless interaction for both radio and climate functions.
Passenger conveniences include power windows, keyless access, push-button start/stop, rain-sensing wipers, heated side mirrors, and multi-color ambient lighting, which all enhance the driving experience.
Every Golf model is equipped with Volkswagen’s CarNet, connecting the car to a smartphone or computer, ensuring drivers stay connected even away from the vehicle.
Iconic Design
The Golf GTI retains its classic compact hatchback appeal, avoiding unnecessary design additions like oversized grilles or vents. Our test car, painted in Atlantic Blue Metallic with a black roof, showcases sleek LED lighting elements and a subtle yet powerful body line.
It’s a design that embodies the pure joy of driving—a hallmark of the Golf lineage.
Driver Assistance and Safety
The 2024 Golf comes equipped with a suite of safety features, including six airbags and Volkswagen’s IQ Drive system. This semi-automated driving assistance includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. In the event of an accident, the Intelligent Crash Response System helps minimize injury by disabling the fuel pump and activating hazard lights.
Pricing and Warranties
The 2024 Golf GTI 380 S is available in three trims, with base prices including the required $1,225 destination fee:
- 380 S: $33,910
- 380 SE: $38,710
- 380 Autobahn: $42,050
These models come with warranties including:

Interestingly, the base model Golf GTI with a 7-speed automatic is priced only $720 below the GTI 380 S, but that’s hardly a fair trade-off when it comes to sheer driving enjoyment.
