Hyundai is currently developing a midsize pickup truck named the Santa Cruz, and insights from Albert Biermann, head of Hyundai N, suggest that a performance variant of this truck could be on the table—potentially competing with Ford’s Baja-inspired Ranger Raptor.
In an interview with Australia’s carsales, Biermann hinted at the possibility of an N version of the Santa Cruz, stating, “You have to be ready for everything from Hyundai and Kia; everything is possible. So there are no limitations.” When The Drive contacted Hyundai for further details, a spokesperson declined to elaborate on Biermann’s remarks.
For those unfamiliar, the Ford Ranger Raptor adapts the rugged, off-road-ready design of the popular F-150 Raptor for the midsize Ranger, although it is currently not slated for a U.S. release.
The speculation surrounding a possible Hyundai Santa Cruz N suggests it could include a long-travel suspension reminiscent of trophy trucks, enhanced power, and a more aggressive aesthetic. It is rumored that it may feature a stronger version of the Veloster N’s 2.0-liter turbo-four engine, increasing the output from 275 to around 300 horsepower.
During the same discussion, Biermann mentioned that his team is also developing a smaller hot hatch, likely based on the i20 supermini available overseas, as well as a performance SUV that appears to closely resemble the rumored Tucson N.
Regardless of whether an N version is produced, it remains unclear if Hyundai’s upcoming pickup will be rebranded as a Kia.
