Cadillac Introduces a New Independent Spotify App

Spotify has introduced a dedicated app for Cadillac vehicles that allows drivers to enjoy music without needing their smartphones. This application is directly integrated into the car’s infotainment system and operates using the built-in 4G LTE connectivity found in most newer Cadillac models, thus removing the necessity for Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, or Android Auto.

Cadillac owners can easily download Spotify from an app store embedded within their vehicle’s infotainment system. The Cadillac version of the app is similar to the mobile variant, featuring menus such as Home, Recently Played, Library, Browse, and Mini Player. Users can also create customized playlists. Notably, Spotify claims that the app offers music recommendations tailored specifically for driving. Additionally, it saves multiple songs in a playlist ahead of time to ensure continuous playback even if the cellular signal is temporarily lost.

While many users access Spotify via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the direct collaboration with Cadillac has afforded Spotify greater flexibility in the app’s design and prominence on in-car displays. The Spotify app is now featured on the primary audio screen, alongside FM and AM radio options. This move also provides Cadillac customers with a fresh digital music alternative that operates independently of CarPlay or Android Auto, a strategy that aligns with CEO Johan de Nysschen’s disapproval of relying on those platforms.

The Spotify app is compatible with several Cadillac models including the ATS, ATS-V, CTS, CTS-V, and XTS. Plans are underway to extend the app’s availability to the CT6 and potentially other Cadillac models for the 2019 production year. However, it remains uncertain whether the app will be made available for other General Motors brands. Meanwhile, Spotify faces competition from other music services vying for a foothold in the automotive market. SiriusXM is preparing to launch a streaming-like service for the 2019 Ram 1500, and Apple is enticing Fiat Chrysler and Volkswagen customers with free trials of Apple Music as part of their promotional efforts.

In vehicle news, the Cadillac CT6 is set to receive a refresh for the 2019 model year, featuring updated styling and a new V-Sport variant equipped with a powerful 550-horsepower 4.2-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine.
