Adrian Newey, a prominent figure in Formula 1 engineering, is making significant waves today. On Tuesday morning, the Aston Martin F1 team officially announced that this legendary designer will join their ranks in 2025. Beginning in March of next year, Newey will take on the role of Managing Technical Partner, concentrating on the development of the team’s car for the 2026 season. After two decades with Red Bull Racing, Newey’s transition includes a financial stake in Aston Martin, reflecting the lucrative nature of his contract.

While Aston Martin has not revealed specific contract details, the BBC reports that Newey’s five-year contract could be valued at up to $40 million annually. If this estimate holds true and Newey completes his contract, it could total a staggering $200 million, positioning the 65-year-old as the highest-paid individual in F1, second only to Lewis Hamilton. This figure surpasses both Fernando Alonso’s earnings at Aston Martin and Max Verstappen’s salary at Red Bull.

“This is monumental news. Adrian is unparalleled in his field – he is at the pinnacle of his profession – and I take immense pride in welcoming him to the Team,” said Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll during a press briefing. “This marks the most significant development since the Aston Martin name re-entered the sport, showcasing our ambition to establish a competitive Formula One team capable of contending for world championships.”

“Once Adrian became available, we understood the importance of securing him. Our early discussions revealed a mutual eagerness to collaborate in this exceptional opportunity. Adrian is not only a racer but also one of the most competitive individuals I’ve encountered. Upon witnessing what we have developed at Silverstone – from our impressive AMR Technology Campus to our talented personnel and the latest wind tunnel in the sport – he immediately grasped our ambitions. We are serious about this endeavor – and so is he. Adrian shares our drive and aspirations, believes in our vision, and will play a vital role in our next chapter.”

No matter the cost involved in bringing Newey onboard, this strategic move is poised to be a landmark moment in F1 history for a team that was once considered small and inconsequential. A few years ago, when Aston Martin took over Sahara Force India and signed Alonso, many, myself included, questioned the motivation behind Alonso’s decision—particularly given his age. An informed insider once mentioned that Stroll was gradually assembling a sophisticated and highly skilled F1 team, with Alonso being a pivotal part of that strategy, but certainly not the sole component. Initially skeptical, I now see how that vision is becoming a reality.

“I am excited to join Aston Martin,” Newey said. “The passion and dedication Lawrence brings to every endeavor has greatly inspired and impressed me. He is committed to building a world-class team and is the only major team owner actively involved in the sport. His commitment is evident in the establishment of the new AMR Technology Campus and wind tunnel at Silverstone, both of which are state-of-the-art and foster an excellent working environment.”

During a question-and-answer session, a reporter asked Newey whether Stroll’s accolades added pressure on him to improve Aston Martin’s performance in a limited timeframe, or if it had no effect on him. Newey clarified that he feels no external pressure and does not pay attention to media coverage about himself or F1. “My motivation to succeed comes from within, not from external influences,” he remarked. “Frank Williams, to my irritation, used to say I was the most competitive person in the paddock. Maybe he was right.”
