This was highlighted at the recent Swedish Wine Tasting event, where international wine analysts tasted some of Europe’s best offerings, and a Swedish wine achieved the highest score. Although Sweden is not traditionally recognized for its wine production, the country now boasts an increasing number of vineyards across its diverse landscapes, proving that remarkable wines can be crafted outside of established regions. Sweden’s cool climate, which might initially seem unfavorable for vine cultivation, combined with innovative growing techniques and an emphasis on cold-hardy grape varieties, has set the stage for success. From the southern coast of Skåne to the charming vistas of Sörmland, each area contributes distinct characteristics that influence the wines’ flavor and essence.
During this summer’s premier event for wine enthusiasts, The Swedish Wine Tasting, Swedish wines were pitted against some of Europe’s finest. A panel of renowned sommeliers and wine critics sampled a selection of 24 wines—half from Sweden and half from other European regions—chosen to reflect similar styles and price ranges. After two hours of rigorous tasting, it became evident that Swedish wines were competitive on the international stage. - Särtshöga Vingård is located by Lake Vättern and specializes in sparkling wines crafted via traditional methods, primarily using the Solaris grape, along with apple cider and juice. The vineyard provides guided tours, tastings, dining options, and accommodations.
- Kullabergs Vingård, whose wine Immelen topped the ratings at The Swedish Wine Tasting, is situated near Nyhamnsläge. Focusing on Solaris and Souvignier Gris grapes, this vineyard produces award-winning white, rosé, orange, and sparkling wines, as well as high-quality spirits. Tours and tastings are available.
- Ästad Vineyard, located in Tvååker, Halland, offers wine tastings alongside a spa experience, featuring hot and cold baths, and on-site restaurants. Accommodations include suites with private spa facilities and cozy log cabins.
- Hällåkra Vingård in Anderslöv is one of Sweden’s oldest and largest vineyards, covering seven hectares and producing a variety of red, white, and sparkling wines. In the summer, visitors can participate in tours, tastings, and enjoy meals at the vineyard’s restaurant.
- Vejby Vineyard in Vejbystrand features an old Georgian-style wine cellar. Owner Jeppe Appelin has gone against the grain by focusing on vibrant red, rosé, and orange wines instead of white. Visitors can enjoy tours and tastings that highlight the vineyard’s rich winemaking heritage.
- Thora Vingård, located on the scenic Bjäre Peninsula between Båstad and Torekov, offers guided tours and tastings for guests wishing to savor high-quality wines made from local grapes such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Solaris.
- Blacksta Vingård in Flen stands as one of Sweden’s northernmost vineyards, just a two-hour drive from Stockholm. It offers tastings of champagne and wine, as well as a truffle festival held over a weekend in November. Guests can also stay overnight in restored buildings dating back to the 1600s.
