The atmosphere at Goodwood is always distinctive.

Over the last five years, I’ve attended numerous events at the picturesque Chichester venue, but 2024 was my inaugural Goodwood Revival. I approached the event with mixed emotions.

My mixed feelings stemmed not from the automobiles or the racing itself, but from the event’s focus on the years between 1948 and 1966. I wondered if this era-specific theme would enhance the overall experience or simply complicate it.

The post-war period was an exhilarating time for motorsport, as evidenced by the impressive entry lists for the Revival’s racing categories, filled with iconic brands and models.

Take, for instance, the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy. This race, featuring pre-1963 GT cars, stands out as one of the most thrilling and competitive events at the Revival, particularly in rainy conditions.

Aston Martin DB4 GTs were in a fierce contest with Ferrari 250 SWBs, alongside Shelby Cobras and a variety of Jaguar E-Types. The sweet sound of straight-six engines revved at full throttle resonated throughout the event.

If you believe that drivers are merely participants in a show, think again. A pair of Ferrari 250s even collided at the chicane leading onto the main straight, leaving the owner of car #17 visibly upset.

For fans of mid-engine vehicles, the Whitsun Trophy showcased an intense rivalry among Ford GT40s competing against early prototypes from Lola, McLaren, and Cooper. Car #1 GT40 is an original race-ready model, while car #5, owned by Adrian Newey – former Chief Technical Officer of Red Bull Racing and now managing Aston Martin F1 – is rumored to have received numerous modifications.

The 2024 Revival featured an array of classic touring cars, from Ford Galaxies to Mini Coopers, along with small open-wheel racers and even pre-war motorcycles. It truly offers something for every enthusiast of historic motorsport.

To access the paddocks and inner circuit, attendees must wear period-appropriate attire, reinforcing the Duke of Richmond’s commitment to recreate the ‘good old days’ of racing, a sentiment I found enjoyable.

Initially hesitant about spending three days shooting motorsport in formal trousers and shoes, my reservations faded as I joined the queue for entry. Those driving pre-1966 vehicles park right at the entrance, and being surrounded by the era’s cars and outfits brought a smile to my face.

The Goodwood Revival delivers an exceptional experience, with a nostalgic atmosphere recreated through period shops and themed attractions. Additionally, the BMW Group’s impressive setup in the infield added to the charm.

Visitors could explore period-appropriate dealerships and garages featuring vintage Rolls-Royce, Mini, BMW, and BMW Motorrad models. Notably, Goodwood has a rich heritage with Rolls-Royce, as their cars are crafted just down the road.

Participants who dressed in vintage fashion were rewarded as well, as they had the chance to compete in the ‘Best Dressed’ competition, where judges selected their favorites from those who embraced the style of the time.

The top prize for the most impressive outfit? A bouquet, a bottle of Veuve Clicquot, and the pride of knowing your attire was sourced from second-hand shops.

The Settrington Cup provided a fun opportunity for the children of competitors to race one another in pedal cars, a true crowd-pleaser.

My experience at the 2024 Goodwood Revival was breathtaking. The scale and splendor of the event, coupled with some of the world’s most coveted cars, provide ample motivation to attend.

I initially worried the event might seem somewhat staged, as even mechanics and kids are encouraged to don period-appropriate clothing. I’m generally averse to ‘organized fun,’ and nothing is more off-putting than being compelled to partake in a ‘fun’ activity with a strict dress code.

However, the Revival fell short of being forced. The enthusiasm of the spectators was genuine, even in the rain, and the atmosphere felt authentic. From the setting to the people to the cars, everything harmonized beautifully, leading to an unforgettable experience.

The experience was so enjoyable that, on Friday evening, I put my cameras down to savor the second half of the Sussex Trophy race. As the sun set, the Ferrari 250 TR’s V12 purred delightfully, and the #54 Lotus-Climax erupted with flames at every downshift into St Mary’s and Lavant.

I was in bliss, even if my vintage attire was soaked through.

If the sight of priceless vintage cars racing on a historic circuit and celebrating a nostalgic bygone era appeals to you, then the Goodwood Revival is a must-visit.

I’m already scouting accommodations for 2025. Bring it on!
