Imagine being told a decade ago that Kia would introduce a rival to the Dodge Charger R/T in the U.S. Most would likely dismiss such a claim as preposterous. However, rumors suggest that Kia may be developing a new muscle car, potentially featuring a V8 engine, in the form of the Kia Stinger.

Kevin Hepworth, Kia Australia’s general manager of media and corporate communications, shared with the Australian outlet Car Advice that while “We have not even considered a V8 for Australia,” he believes “they’re developing one.” He added, “There may be a possibility the US could pick it up,” though he clarified that there haven’t been any discussions about a V8 for Australia.

Car Advice has since reported that Kia Australia contacted them to clarify that miscommunications may have occurred due to a poor phone connection, implying that they cannot definitively confirm or deny the existence of a V8 Stinger. Interpret that information as you wish.

Car Advice logically proposes that if the Kia Stinger were to be equipped with a V8, it would likely be the 5.0-liter Tau V8 already used in the Genesis G80. Since both the Stinger and G80 share some components and similar dimensions, utilizing the Tau engine—which delivers 420 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque—seems a fitting choice.

While introducing a rear-wheel drive Kia sedan with a V8 may seem unconventional in an era dominated by crossovers, it could prove to be a calculated risk. Currently, the Dodge Charger R/T and its counterpart, the Chrysler 300C, are among the few vehicles in this specific class at this price point. A V8-equipped Kia Stinger could capture market share that FCA might be overlooking, while also sparking renewed interest in the brand.
