I completed my first half marathon in May 2013 at the Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon. I had just started my running journey that January and wanted a challenge to motivate myself and celebrate my progress. Given my love for travel, I quickly became captivated by the experience of racing.
This experience inspired me to take on a bigger goal: to run a half marathon in each state. Since then, I’ve participated in almost 50 half marathons and aim to finish my 40th state by the year’s end. My races have taken place in bustling cities, charming small towns, and in the vicinity of national parks. I’ve even tackled two races in one weekend across adjacent states like Ohio and Kentucky.
Running half marathons across the country has allowed me to explore the U.S. in a unique way. Many of these events are part of larger festivals featuring shorter distances, such as 5Ks and fun runs, making it a family-friendly activity suitable for all fitness levels.
Traveling in an RV is an excellent way to reach these races. With many comforts of home, you also have the option to explore the surroundings for a few extra days. From hiking trails to scenic rivers and nearby state or national parks, there’s always a lot to discover. If you’re flying, you can easily rent an RV at your destination and stay at campgrounds or RV parks near the race starting point.
I have so many unforgettable racing moments as well. Running along Las Vegas Boulevard at night during the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon was truly a bucket list experience. Similarly, running through Churchill Downs at the Kentucky Derby Festival Mini Marathon just a week before the famed race, watching the jockeys warm up, is a memory I will always cherish.
