Lincoln Sedans Won’t Be Back Anytime Soon

Lincoln is streamlining its lineup, retaining only its most popular models: crossovers and SUVs. The automaker is discontinuing its sedans, with MKZ production having ceased in the summer and the Continental set to conclude by year-end. For those hoping Lincoln would introduce a new sedan, disappointment follows as the brand has no immediate plans to do so.

In a conversation with Ford Authority, Kumar Galhotra, Ford VP and President of North America, noted that the luxury brand does not foresee any new sedan development in the near future. This decision is made despite the segment’s popularity in China, where Lincoln continues to experience sales progress. Recently, Lincoln introduced the China-manufactured Corsair crossover, which has contributed positively to its sales.

The phase-out of Lincoln’s sedans is not unexpected, given that consumer trends have shifted away from sedans towards larger crossovers and SUVs in recent years. Lincoln’s MKZ saw its production end on July 31 of this year, marking the conclusion of its two-generation production run that began in 2006. The Continental was also a hallmark of the brand’s upscale design shift and introduced new model names. However, its production will end shortly.

But there’s no need for alarm, as Lincoln’s ban on sedans isn’t set in stone. Galhotra informed Ford Authority that the company is continuously monitoring market trends and potential opportunities. For now, Lincoln will focus on catering to the demand for crossovers and SUVs, which are currently performing well for the brand. However, this direction might change if SUV and crossover sales begin to decline and sedan sales experience a resurgence, although such a turnaround could take several years.
