In today’s unveiling of the latest Volvo XC90, the company also provided a glimpse of an upcoming flagship electric sedan, the ES90, which is set to be the pinnacle of its vehicle lineup.
Details about the ES90 are limited, but a promotional video showcased its silhouette and name. However, additional insights from Autocar suggest a clearer picture. The ES90 is reportedly around 16 feet in length, closely resembling the dimensions of a Mercedes S-Class, and will utilize the same electric platform as the EX90 SUV. As with many electric vehicles, the ES90 is expected to feature two powertrain options: a single-motor (rear-wheel drive) variant and a dual-motor (all-wheel drive) version. Additionally, it will likely be equipped with the same 111-kWh battery pack found in the EX90.
In the EX90 SUV model, the dual-motor setup delivers 402 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque. There’s also a Performance version that boosts output to 510 horsepower and 671 lb-ft of torque. While specifics about the ES90 are not yet confirmed, similar powertrain options are to be anticipated.
The teaser images indicate that the ES90 will feature a roofline reminiscent of Polestar designs, characterized by a substantial C-pillar and a compact rear deck. There’s also a hint of the Volkswagen Phaeton’s influence. The space located between the rear door and C-pillar appears to allow for ample headroom and considerable recline, typical of large luxury executive vehicles. Thus, one can expect the rear seating experience to compete with high-end rivals such as the S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Lexus LS.
It is speculated that the ES90 might be manufactured in China at a facility owned by Geely, Volvo’s parent company, according to Autocar. However, this model is expected to cater to a global market, including sales in Europe and North America. No specific release date has been announced for the ES90, but with production designs already being hinted at, a launch may occur next year.
