Move aside, Herbie. While we adore the classic movie car, it can’t compete with this unique vehicle that is currently available on eBay. Originally a standard German-spec 1965 Type 1, this car found its way to the United States and into its current owner’s possession in 2004. By 2013, it emerged from Radium Engineering transformed into an incredibly powerful machine aimed at dominating the competition.

This might sound like an exaggeration, but just take a look at it. The car has been entirely rebuilt from scratch, as demonstrated in the build video. The original 40 horsepower engine has been swapped for a formidable turbocharged Subaru EJ25 from an STI. It sports Porsche Fuchs wheels and Porsche headlights, while the suspension and braking systems have been upgraded to accommodate the Subaru engine’s significantly increased horsepower. Early photos featured a Porsche 911-inspired whale tail rear wing, but the latest images, including the eBay listing, show the car with a classic Volkswagen engine cover, which is partially opened, reminiscent of the original Fiat 500 Abarth.

Despite its advanced modern features, the car remains surprisingly true to its original look, though it does sit noticeably lower than stock. Its exterior appears relatively understated, making it an excellent sleeper, although the Hoosier drag radials are a telltale sign. The interior is just as basic, featuring a full roll cage, and the original speedometer has been swapped for a Porsche tachometer, the only important gauge for a racer. Open the glove compartment to find a contemporary control panel filled with buttons and gauges, including the starter. However, when the glove box door is closed, the classic character of the interior is preserved.

As of now, the bidding for this remarkable vehicle stands at $7,700 and is climbing rapidly. Having grown up in my mom’s 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle and idolizing Herbie the Love Bug, I can confidently say I’m a fan. But this modified beast outclasses Herbie by a long shot. Someone needs to scoop up this incredible car before I end up selling my Jetta Ute, taking out a second mortgage, and purchasing it myself. Please.
