For serious racing enthusiasts, Dobson Motorsport is offering a rare 1958 Lister-Jaguar Knobbly for a price of $595,000. While the steep cost may deter some buyers, the vehicle’s rarity, impressive performance, and rich racing history make it a remarkable find. This is a genuine race car with significant pedigree.

The original Lister was part of a limited production run of just five magnesium-bodied models, and this particular car is the only one still operational. Initially built as a factory racing vehicle, it earned the nickname "Knobbly" due to its fender flares resembling those of the Jaguar D-Type. During its debut season in 1958, this specific Lister claimed numerous victories at the hands of legendary driver Sir Stirling Moss.

Over the years, this car has changed ownership several times before coming into the possession of renowned Jaguar restorer John Pearson, after enduring a serious accident. Pearson successfully restored the vehicle to almost its original factory condition and later sold it to Steve O’Rourke, the manager of Pink Floyd, in 1989. O’Rourke raced it in various historic competitions before it passed through additional owners. Eventually, it ended up with a collector who invested over $200,000 into its restoration. The seller affirms that the Lister is still race-ready, capable of competing in prestigious events like the Rolex Reunion and Goodwood Revival.

Although the listing does not specify performance details, original Knobbly models were powered by a 3.6-liter inline-six engine from the Jaguar XK series.

For those curious about why this car is valued at nearly $600,000, it’s worth noting that the price is relatively reasonable. In 2016, Lister and Sir Moss collaborated to create ten reproduction Knobbly models, each priced over $1.3 million. These reproductions feature the same magnesium body and now come equipped with a 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine delivering 330 horsepower, capable of reaching speeds of 186 mph thanks to modern engineering.

While the new Stirling Moss-approved models are certainly impressive, the original Knobbly might represent a wiser investment. With the funds saved, one could even consider purchasing a more affordable asset, such as a nice home.
