Bentley Unveils 2022 Continental GT Speed Convertible
Three weeks after introducing its latest powerful model, Bentley has officially revealed the 2022 Continental GT Speed Convertible. Although the launch was anticipated, the car’s debut remains striking.
The convertible showcases noticeable differences from its coupe counterpart, distinguishing itself as the more luxurious option. Notably, the roof is available in seven color choices, including tweed, allowing buyers to create a personalized two-tone design for their dream open-air grand tourer.
In contrast, the coupe features a beautifully sculpted metal roof that matches the vehicle’s body color, making the convertible the clear victor in terms of style.
As for the convertible’s roof, it can be opened in as little as 19 seconds at the push of a button. While this may seem on the slower side compared to similar vehicles that typically complete this action in 13 to 16 seconds, the Bentley’s larger and heavier roof may account for the difference, especially given the added insulation needed for a quieter cabin experience.
Lauded as the “most driver-focused convertible in the Continental GT lineup,” this model is equipped with the same twin-turbo W12 engine as the coupe, delivering 650 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. Performance-wise, it accelerates to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds—only 0.1 seconds slower than the coupe—and it matches the coupe’s top speed of 208 mph.
The convertible inherits Bentley’s advanced four-wheel steering, chassis, and suspension systems. Its three-chamber active air suspension with adaptive damping helps this substantial vehicle navigate corners effortlessly. The 48-volt electrical system powers an active anti-roll control function that adjusts the anti-roll bars in just 0.3 seconds to maintain stability during turns. Similar to the coupe, the convertible is available only as an all-wheel-drive model.
While details about standard braking specifications for the Speed Convertible remain unclear, Bentley emphasizes the optional carbon-ceramic brakes. These powerful brakes feature ten pistons in the front and four in the rear, capable of generating 10 megajoules of energy—sufficient to drive about ten miles in an average electric vehicle—while coming to a stop from the car’s maximum speed.
Though these specifications may not be a priority for the typical Bentley customer—who likely possesses multiple Bentleys and exotic sports cars—they nevertheless attest to the model’s impressive capabilities. Ultimately, it’s comforting for buyers to know that their luxury convertible can achieve high performance when desired. If that’s not the focus, they can simply relax, enjoy the Naim sound system, and relish the ride.
Pricing details for the 2022 Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible have yet to be announced, but it is expected to be priced higher than the coupe, which starts at $274,900.
