Today, Hyundai unveiled the new 2018 Elantra GT at the Chicago Auto Show. Targeted at its European hot hatch competitors, this model features a lower, more aggressive stance compared to the standard Elantra and is filled with advanced technology and numerous optional extras.

Scott Margason, the director of product planning at Hyundai Motor America, stated, “The new Elantra GT brings more options to North America for the 2018 model year. There’s increased space and features inside, a bolder, more European design outside, and more choices under the hood. I’m particularly eager to present the GT Sport, a genuine hot hatch.”

A Potential GTI Competitor?

The specifications of the GT Sport suggest that it may indeed compete with the GTI. Equipped with a 201-horsepower 1.6-liter engine and a six-speed manual transmission—although there is also a seven-speed dual-clutch option—Volkswagen might have reason to feel anxious. This is especially true if the vehicle’s handling matches its striking appearance, having been fine-tuned on the renowned Nurburgring, a favorite testing ground of James May.

Packed with Technology

Hyundai is enhancing their new hot hatch with a wealth of optional technology, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto showcased on an 8-inch display, as well as wireless smartphone charging. Additional features offered include adaptive cruise control, Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Detection, and Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection—technologies that may surprise some coming from Hyundai.

While the pricing details have yet to be revealed, it is anticipated that the Elantra GT will be competitively priced alongside rivals from Volkswagen, Ford, Mazda, and Honda. If it performs as well as Hyundai promises, it could present serious competition in the segment.
