The Chevrolet Express van is so commonplace that many might consider it an outdated vehicle—but that’s not the case. This reliable commercial work van is still available for purchase and can be personalized through Chevy’s online configurator. In honor of America’s birthday, let’s appreciate this true workhorse by designing the ultimate Chevy Express.

It’s not surprising that Chevy allows customers to customize the Express van, despite its long-standing presence in the market. The Express serves various industries, offering a range of configurations to meet diverse requirements. With multiple jobs come different demands, and the Chevy Express aims to meet them all.

The Express van comes in two main variants: the Express Cargo and the Express Passenger van, which are self-explanatory. The Cargo version features two front seats and a spacious interior for loading cargo. Conversely, the Passenger version accommodates up to 15 passengers with seats throughout the back. Despite its age, the starting price for the basic Cargo model is still around $45,880. The van is available in both 2500 and 3500 configurations, depending on your hauling needs.

For our unique build, we’re opting for the Express Cargo with two doors. Customers can choose between two engine options: a 4.3-liter V6 and a 6.6-liter V8—the choice for our sporty build is undoubtedly the V8. After selecting the V8 engine, you can choose from four color options. While the Express is often seen in white, the color choices include Summit White, Black, Silver Ice Metallic, and the vibrant Red Hot! Red Hot will be our pick, and we’ll enhance its look with optional white 16-inch steel wheels. Additionally, the gray cloth interior is a must for safety and comfort during spirited driving.

A variety of options and packages are available based on the intended use of the van, including configurations for hotel shuttles, paratransit services, and safety enhancements. However, since our sporty van is primarily designed for thrilling drives, we are opting for minimal add-ons, aside from the automatic locking rear differential.

While newer work vans are available from various manufacturers like Ford, Nissan, and Mercedes, the Chevy Express continues to be a favored choice for numerous businesses, even though it was first released in 1996. Notably, there’s a possibility that it could be produced beyond its anticipated end-of-life date in 2026. Personally, I wish for the Chevy Express to endure indefinitely.
