Owners of pre-facelift Mazda RX-8 models have received disappointing news: another visit to the local Mazda dealership is necessary. On the bright side, this appointment will not cost anything.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Mazda has announced two separate recalls due to defective fuel pump and front suspension components in early versions of the Wankel-powered sports car. Specifically, 69,447 RX-8 units manufactured between 2004 and 2008 are affected by an issue where fuel pump pipes “may degrade due to heat from the engine and exhaust system.” This can cause the fuel pumps to crack, leading to potential fuel leaks. Additionally, 35,332 RX-8s from the 2004 model year, many of which likely overlap with the previously mentioned vehicles, have front lower control arms with ball joint sockets that could crack under heavy stress.

As is customary, affected Mazda owners will receive notifications and are encouraged to schedule an appointment at their local dealership as soon as possible. The dealership will replace the fuel pump filter kits and lower control arms at no cost.

If you own a Mazda RX-8 from 2004 to 2008 and have any questions or concerns, you can reach out to Mazda customer service at 1-800-263-4680 or contact the NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236. More information about both recalls can be found here and here.
