Volkswagen has given its most popular model, the Golf R, a refresh for the American market. While U.S. customers won’t benefit from an increase to 310 horsepower like their European counterparts, they will receive a new seven-speed DSG transmission that enhances acceleration, allowing the car to achieve higher speeds and improved track performance. The updated MK7.5 Golf R is also equipped with 17-inch drilled disc brakes and enhanced aerodynamics, making it competitive with rivals like the Subaru WRX STI and Ford Focus RS.

To help differentiate the Golf R from the GTI, the model has received a subtle facelift that addresses a frequent criticism. It features larger front intakes that create a bolder appearance, seamlessly linking the car’s profile to the rear diffuser. Additionally, a rear spoiler not only enhances downforce but also contributes to a more athletic aesthetic.

While the Performance Package does not boost straight-line speed, it enables the Golf R to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds, with a maximum speed of 166 mph. It comes equipped with Pirelli Trofeo R tires, which enhance cornering capabilities alongside other track-oriented improvements compared to last year’s model. A titanium Akrapovic exhaust system adds a sporty sound to the high-output 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Volkswagen has stated that the Performance Package will be available “later this year,” although no specific release date was provided. Regardless of when it launches, it is set to elevate the Golf R’s value in the $35K-$40K range.
