Ferrari is not typically associated with turbocharging. Although the 288 GTO and F40 were equipped with 2.9L turbo V8 engines, Ferrari has primarily built its reputation on high-revving, naturally aspirated engines. The 488, which succeeded the 458 Italia, reintroduced turbocharging to Ferrari’s lineup with its compact 3.9L V8 engine producing 661 horsepower. In this GT3 version, the 488 makes a distinctive array of turbo sounds that resonate through the hills with flutters and whooshes. While it certainly produces different sounds, it doesn’t sound bad; it still shares the technology that makes it a powerful contender on the track.

The sounds emitted by the 488 are reminiscent of those typically heard in rally racing and drifting. As air rushes into the 488’s intake and exits through its noisy wastegates, the effect is particularly noticeable as it navigates sharp corners, allowing for distinctive “stu-stu-stu” sounds. Despite the audible differences, the benefits of turbocharging could be significant for the team this season.

The 488 GT3 faces stiff competition from McLaren and Mercedes-AMG in the upcoming season. Ferrari’s team has enjoyed considerable success in recent seasons, propelling the Competizioni GT team to the forefront of the series. The 488 GT3 is likely to stand out as one of the most strikingly designed GT3 cars on the grid, with its dynamic wings and canards seamlessly integrated with the car’s structure, appearing faster than ever both visually and audibly..
