Electric sports cars and high-performance models have become more prevalent, reflecting broader consumer interest. The original Tesla Roadster was a groundbreaking vehicle as the first street-legal sports car powered by lithium-ion batteries. However, in 2024, its novelty is diminished, particularly with the long wait since the announcement of its successor without tangible results. In this context, the emergence of the innovative MG Cyberster is particularly noteworthy as it enters the market ahead of Tesla.

Data for the MG Cyberster comes from the Chinese SAIC MG sales website. These figures, including MSRP and performance specifications, may change before the car arrives in Western markets.

Comparing The MG Cyberster And The New Tesla Roadster

Before delving into specifics, it’s important to note that the Cyberster has been tested for a 0-100 km/h acceleration, equivalent to 0-62 mph, meaning exact 0-60 mph data is not currently available. However, we do know that it will achieve 60 mph faster than 62 mph. Conversely, we lack any verified specifications for the Tesla Roadster at this time, only claims from Tesla and our estimates based on the tri-motor Model S Plaid.

It’s crucial to highlight once more that the data for the Cyberster is sourced directly from the MG order page, while the specifications for the Tesla Roadster are primarily based on claims and rough estimates. Notably, Elon Musk has alluded to the possibility of the new Roadster featuring rocket boosters for an astounding 1.1-second 0-60 time and even the capability to fly short distances.

We are not exaggerating these points. Although the numbers associated with the Roadster appear impressive on paper, we await actual performance confirmations once it undergoes track testing.

Gaining An Advantage In The Market

Ultimately, specifications are less important than the fact that MG Motors, a smaller division under Chinese automotive leader SAIC Motors, has secured a market advantage over Tesla. The Cyberster made its presence known at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where our own Gerhard Horn observed considerable public interest.

Unlike Electric Avenue, which showcased mainstream EVs, the MG exhibit consistently attracted large crowds curious about the electric roadster. It’s astounding to see people gravitating towards an electric vehicle over others just a short distance away, like those from Pagani.”

The route to market for the Cyberster was relatively efficient. Concept images were unveiled in early 2021, with a physical prototype showcased at Auto Shanghai in April of the same year. A pre-production model was presented to the UK press in 2023, and its official world debut occurred during the July 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed event. The first production models are expected to reach customers by the end of 2024.

Drawing inspiration from the British Motor Corporation’s MGB roadster, the Cyberster is designed with a “gaming style EV” concept, integrating an infotainment system that operates on the Unreal Engine 4, used in popular games such as Ace Combat 7, the Gears of War series, and the Final Fantasy 7 remake. Its aesthetic features clean lines, sleek curves, a convertible soft-top, “Magic Eye” pop-up headlights, and scissor doors.

A reported driving range of 500 miles remains to be confirmed by the EPA.

The Cyberster’s design, specifications, and powertrain options illustrate a focused approach that allowed MG Motors to efficiently advance the vehicle from concept to production despite setbacks, such as a pandemic-induced delay.

This streamlined process is more attainable when you’re not promising the complexities of a rocket-propelled car.

Will The MG Cyberster Maintain Its Market Position?

In the UK, discussions may shift from wondering if the MG Cyberster can maintain its lead to questioning whether the Tesla Roadster can catch up. Currently, there is uncertainty regarding what to expect from the new Roadster. Tesla claims it will offer a range of 620 miles and a button-free interior dominated by a massive touchscreen.

Simply put, the Cyberster has established itself as a known quantity, while the Roadster remains an enigma. As the Roadster approaches release, the market may see an influx of affordable electric sports cars. If Tesla’s competitive edge continues to wane, the Roadster will need exceptional features to garner a positive reception rather than a lukewarm one.

However, it remains uncertain whether the Cyberster will enter the North American market or remain exclusive to Europe and Asia. Production facilities are being established in Mexico, so even if the vehicle doesn’t officially sell in the U.S., potential buyers could always apply for a work visa and acquire it piece by piece. This approach might also help MG navigate around the 102% tariff on Chinese imports.

Although the exact pricing for European markets is still unknown, the base model is available in Asia for about $45,000 USD, calculated from the Yuan-to-USD conversion on the manufacturer’s sales page. Should it become available in the U.S., a significant markup is expected. However, even with a price increase, the Cyberster would still likely be far more affordable than the Tesla Roadster, which costs $50,000 to reserve, with total costs for the base model expected to reach $200,000. If the Cyberster becomes available in the U.S., its pricing advantage could make it a highly attractive option for consumers.
