Ford’s partnership with Tesla to utilize the Supercharger network has significantly improved fast-charging options for its customers. Future Ford models will feature Tesla’s NACS connector, while current vehicle owners will be provided with adapters to convert from CCS to NACS. However, the supply of these adapters has faced delays in production, as reported by Detroit Free Press.

Earlier this year, Ford announced that the adapters would be offered free to existing electric vehicle (EV) owners, specifically those with a Mustang Mach-E or an F-150 Lightning. When the ordering system opened in late February, the overwhelming interest from customers flooded Ford’s system, highlighting the high demand for the adapters. Unfortunately, Ford has struggled to keep pace, leading to delays as customers receive notifications about postponed deliveries. The company claims it did not misjudge the demand, but is also facing delays from its supplier responsible for manufacturing the adapters.

Marty Günsberg, a representative from Ford’s Model E EV division, told the Detroit Free Press, “We’re not overwhelmed. This is what we anticipated. While we’re shipping weekly, reservations continue to come in. The supply is constrained. Sales are up and customers continue to reserve their complimentary adapter. We keep getting reservations.”

The backlog of adapter requests is not only due to supply shortages. Sales of the updated 2024 Mach-E have surged significantly, nearly doubling compared to last year’s figures by the end of May. The Mach-E currently stands as the second-best-selling electric SUV in the U.S., trailing only the Tesla Model Y. However, with Tesla experiencing a drop in demand, the future rankings may shift. Existing Mach-E owners can expect their adapters to be delivered in the order their requests were received, as Ford is processing them on a first-come, first-served basis. Customers can check the estimated delivery time on their order status page.
