Ram’s revamped 2019 truck lineup has not only surpassed the previous sales figures of Chevrolet’s Silverado range but has also secured its position as the second-best-selling pickup family in the United States. This achievement marks a historic moment, as it is the first time Ram has dethroned Chevy from its long-standing runner-up status, leaving only the beloved Ford F-Series ahead in sales. This shift can be attributed to a highly praised redesign of Ram’s light- and heavy-duty models, which contrasts sharply with Chevrolet’s underwhelming updates that have failed to impress both experts and consumers.
In 2019, Ram sold 633,694 full-size trucks, significantly outpacing the Silverado, which sold 575,600 units—a decline of two percent from the previous year. In comparison, Fiat-Chrysler’s Ram brand experienced an impressive 18 percent increase in sales over the same period.
Further examining the sales data, Chevrolet’s heavy-duty lineup experienced an eight percent decline, while the half-ton light-duty models saw a one percent drop. However, Ram has not disclosed specific sales figures for its light- and heavy-duty trucks.
Indicators of this shift were apparent early in the year; by the end of the first quarter, Ram had outsold Chevrolet by 5,713 units. Although the Silverado made some recovery in sales percentages, it was not enough to reclaim its position in the face of attractive incentives from Ram, particularly in the latter part of 2019.
When combining the Silverado’s sales with its GMC Sierra counterpart, which achieved 232,323 units, General Motors recorded a total of 807,923 full-size pickups. While this figure exceeds Ram’s sales, it is a technicality not considered in single-brand comparisons. Both Ram and Chevrolet remain significantly behind Ford, which by the end of the third quarter of 2019 had sold 662,574 F-Series trucks, with full-year sales numbers still pending..
