Following the trend of many new hypercars, Bugatti’s upcoming Chiron successor is set to embrace electrification. Bugatti CEO Wolfgang Durheimer, in an interview with Autocar, confirmed that the next generation of the hypercar will feature electric components.
Durheimer stated, “The next car is still far from development, but given the advancements in battery and electric motor technology, along with evolving regulations, it appears certain that the next model will incorporate electrification in some form.”
Currently, the Bugatti Chiron boasts an 8.0-liter W-16 engine that delivers 1,479 horsepower and 1,179 lb-ft of torque, allowing the impressive 4,400-pound supercar to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds. With the addition of a hybrid powertrain, there is potential for even faster acceleration times.
The hybrid system is expected to provide additional torque, enhancing areas of the power curve that may be limited, thus improving acceleration. Competitors such as the McLaren P1, Ferrari LaFerrari, and Porsche 918 Spyder have already proven the benefits of hybrid powertrains, with the LaFerrari reaching 60 mph in just 2.4 seconds and 100 mph in 4.7 seconds.
However, the hybrid powertrain for the Bugatti Chiron is still over five years away and remains in the predevelopment phase. Therefore, there is ample opportunity to purchase a non-electrified Bugatti—if you can afford it, that is.
