The Toyota GR Corolla is gearing up for its third market year with some exciting enhancements. Recent information circulating on owner forums suggests that for the 2025 model year, Toyota plans to introduce an eight-speed automatic transmission option. Additionally, all models are expected to see an increase in torque, rising from 272 lb-ft to 295 lb-ft in the standard variants, excluding the Morizo edition.

This information surfaced from a community member on the GR Corolla Forum, who shared a screenshot of a document detailing new features for the Canadian 2025 model cars. This document, allegedly sourced from a verified owners group on Facebook, highlights the addition of the “new 8-speed automatic transmission,” the aforementioned “peak engine torque increase,” along with a “revised front bumper design” and a “new sub-radiator” for Premium-grade models, aimed at enhancing engine cooling during high-performance driving. The sub-radiator was also recently included in the GR Yaris, likely necessitating larger air intakes for that model.

In addition, another post supports these claims and adds further potential changes for 2025, especially regarding trim and color choices. Notably, the Blue Flame color, which was available for the 2024 Circuit Edition, appears to be discontinued for now. Nevertheless, the new automatic transmission is likely to attract many buyers, aligning with Toyota’s goal to provide more performance-oriented automatics in their enthusiast models. This eight-speed transmission is anticipated to be available exclusively with the mid-level Premium trim, while the base Core model is expected to remain a manual-only option.

The automatic transmission in question is the “Direct Automatic Transmission” that has garnered attention in recent years, being integrated into the GR Yaris. It adds a mere 40 pounds to the car’s weight while boasting “world-class gear-shifting speeds,” thanks to advanced software and a clutch designed with “highly heat-resistant friction material.” Although The Drive has yet to experience this transmission, there’s optimism for future test drives.

Moreover, the torque increase will benefit both types of drivers; those who prefer manual shifting and those who wish to let the vehicle handle gear changes. Initially, it might seem that future GR Corollas would simply adopt the same features and tuning that granted the ultra-limited Morizo Edition its 295 lb-ft torque, but Toyota’s methods for achieving this new torque target remain unclear. As someone who regularly drives a 2024 model with only 272 lb-ft, I have no complaints.
