CASE Construction Equipment is embracing electric technology with its new 580EV electric backhoe loader, following the introduction of the Project Zeus electric backhoe concept at CONEXPO 2020. The advancement of this production model has been shaped by input from customers.

This next-generation electric vehicle (EV) offers a low-noise, zero-emission alternative, ideal for urban areas or other locations where noise and emissions are a concern. Additional benefits include instant torque, reduced fuel costs, and decreased maintenance requirements.

The CASE 580EV electric backhoe loader matches the dimensions and digging specifications of the company’s diesel model, the 4WD, 97 hp CASE 580SN, while delivering equivalent breakout forces. It also introduces several enhancements, such as an 8-inch color display, air conditioning, and adjustable four-corner LED strobe lights that feature multiple colors.

Equipped with a 400-volt, 71 kWh battery pack that recharges via a standard Level 2 J1772 connector, the new electric backhoe loader can operate for up to eight hours on a single charge, depending on usage conditions. Its battery system incorporates a thermal management design with specific cooling circuits to sustain performance in varying temperatures.

“From the beginning, we designed this machine to be a dedicated EV, rather than converting an existing model. This has allowed for a range of innovative features that will influence teams considering electric equipment,” stated Brad Stemper, Product Management Lead for North America. “We evaluated every component of the machine, optimizing power consumption to deliver outstanding EV capabilities that operators will experience while digging, loading, or moving materials.”

The four-wheel-drive 580EV employs two independent electric motors to operate the PowerDrive transmission, as well as hydraulic pumps for the loader, backhoe, and steering systems. This setup minimizes energy use and enhances performance during loading tasks.

Following the launch of the 580EV, CASE plans to introduce two more EV models: the CX25EV 2.5-metric ton mini-excavator and the CL36EV 3.6-metric ton compact wheel loader. With these additions, CASE’s electric lineup will expand to five models, which also includes the previously released CX15EV electric mini excavator and the SL22EV small articulated loader.

“These innovative machines establish a new standard for electrification and sustainable construction, reflecting our commitment to customer-focused practical innovation as we broaden our product range,” said Terry Dolan, VP of North America. “Electrification offers tangible solutions to unique job site challenges, enabling urban construction professionals, utility teams, municipal workers, and other contractors to enhance their productivity, efficiency, and profitability.”
