Despite Ford having officially unveiled the Mustang GTD and showcased it at various events, the vehicle is still in the testing phase at the Nürburgring. The automaker is continuing to fine-tune the steering, brakes, and suspension systems in preparation for the production models. This ongoing testing is beneficial, as it provides us with more spy footage like this recent clip, featuring the car navigating Germany’s iconic track while showcasing its supercharged V8 engine.
The Mustang GTD is remarkable for numerous reasons, including its advanced chassis modifications and unique inboard pushrod rear suspension. However, as a quintessential American muscle car, its engine remains the main attraction. The 5.2-liter supercharged V8 generates over 800 horsepower, propelling the GTD to a top speed of more than 190 mph. Nevertheless, in the video, the exhaust note doesn’t seem significantly different from that of the Mustang Dark Horse, which retails for less than a third of the GTD’s price. This is particularly evident even with the GTD’s Akrapovic titanium exhaust system.
Without a doubt, it sounds impressive. It truly does. However, I’m not convinced it sounds worth $325,000, especially when competing models like the exhilarating Corvette Z06 are available for half the cost. In the realm of American V8s, the Mustang GTD has a rather conventional exhaust note.
However, the Mustang GTD’s appeal extends far beyond its exhaust sound. With its innovative suspension, a lightweight curb weight of just 3,268 pounds, and aggressive aerodynamics—highlighted by its prominent rear wing—the GTD is much closer to a GT3 race car than to the Dark Horse variant. The car appears to change direction rapidly and handle the Nürburgring’s roughest sections with ease, suggesting it will meet expectations.
Ford still has a number of months to go before the Mustang GTDs begin reaching customers, with an anticipated release no earlier than late 2024. Those selected customers are now in the process of choosing their preferred colors and options, undoubtedly eager to receive the most powerful Mustang ever created.
