Mitsubishi has announced that the name of its new Eclipse Cross SUV, which is set to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month, is derived from "a term used to describe an astronomical event." The latter half of the name reflects its classification as a "crossover." However, given that Mitsubishi is repurposing a name once associated with a popular series of fun, affordable sports coupes for a soft-roader, we at The Drive choose to view the name as a tribute to the smooth yacht rocker Christopher Cross.

According to Mitsubishi’s press materials and the images that have been released (some of which we have adjusted for clarity and included below), the Eclipse Cross is expected to be a relatively compact SUV. While we might hesitate to label it as possessing a “beautiful, dynamic form” that invokes “the same excitement and inspiration as a diamond ring glimpsed before and after a total solar eclipse,” we recognize that the company is attempting to create buzz around another crossover—one that bears a resemblance to the new Honda CR-V from the rear. We can overlook some of the embellishments in their description.

The new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on March 7th.
